Viridans streptococci
micrograph of a blood culture specimen

This is a photomicrograph of a blood culture specimen, depicts numbers of Gram-positive, alpha-hemolytic viridans streptococci group bacteria, most of which were arranged in two long chains. The viridans streptococci group of bacteria is composed of a number of streptococcal species that are either alpha-hemolytic, or non-hemolytic. The term, Streptococcus viridans, has, and is still used to denote the viridans streptococci group, but identifying an entire group using a single specie’s name is inaccurate.
