Streptococcus pneumoniae cultivated on Columbia agar with 5% defibrinated sheep blood. Cultivation 48 hours in an aerobic atmosphere enriched with 5% carbon dioxide. The strain produces high ammounts of capsular polysaccharide which gives its glistening appearance.
